Topic: 1940 Ford Motor #

This is a copy of the bill of sale for a 1940 Ford I bought in 1950. I disposed of the car long ago. Just wondering if the motor #525122 can be traced. I seem to remember the motor was the 60 hp rather than the 85 hp.

The first two numbers, 52, do indicate that it was a sixty hp. 1940 was the last year for that engine, which appeared first in 1937. 5122 would be the production serial number. Ford tried a version of the 9N tractor engine to replace it, but it was even less successful due to lack of power. Your transfer certificate shows the date 1950, so it must have been a used car at that time.

Since the number was on the transmission not the engine, it would be an extraordinary stroke of luck to find the engine and trans still hooked together, but it could happen! You probably would have a better chance of winning the lottery though!

That may be true today, but in 1950 the chances of having an original motor and transmission in a 1940 car were very high and probably even higher in a 60hp car as they were not rebuilt in quantities like the 85 hp engine.
