Ok just spent an hour trying to put the center piece on the hood. What is the best way to do this?????

Man oh man, I've asked myself that each and every time I restore a '39 or a '40.
If you are using reproduction trim I strongly suggest you do NOT attempt to install the clips in the trim and then push the clips in place. the new trim is so thin you WILL damage it.
After all the cars I've done I have settled down to this method as getting my vote for "best method":

Install the hood ornament but keep it only slightly loose. This is especially important with the rear screw that will be hidden by the center trim.
Now, install the clips in to the hood (holes). Once the clips are installed start the trim (from the rear of the hood obviously) over the first clip. Push the trim forward and over each subsequent clip until it mates with the end of the hood ornament.
Then, tighten the ornament fasteners as necessary.
Yes, you must be careful not to damage the paint. Yes, it can be done safely.
As a matter of fact, I have to do one very soon.

Thank you ,, I thought I may have to take the hood off and do it that way. You are talking about the little square clips for that center piece?

The center trim for the hood uses spring clips. If you think you may have the wrong clips, I can post a picture.

My original hood strip has what I think are the original spring clips, and I recently put it back on. Just lightly bumped it with the palm of my hand. The spring clips were still in the original spots in the trim. But, I could tell it would be easy to bend it, and kubes40 may have the best method.
