Topic: Replacing the springs on the trunk support arms

The springs on the trunk support arms of my 40 coupe need to be replaced. Before I tackle this job, I'd like some expert advice on the best method of replacing them.

Thanks very much.

Bill: If the springs need to be replaced, the best option is to replace the entire arm assemblies because it is likely that the pivots are also worn. It is a simple job. You just support the lid and unbolt the old, then install the new. C&G has good ones (800/266-0470) as part No. 91A-7744200/1 for your car, about a hundred bucks for the pair. Sure beats getting your head dented by a falling lid!

Thanks Super. I want to keep as much original as I can, but you're probably right about the arms. I'll take your advice and change the supports.

Bill, Super is correct. In most cases of hood and trunk supports, the springs are OK. The pivot wears and changes the geometry of the support arm and the spring can no longer do it's job.

Before Bob Drake started reproducing the arms, I had replaced the spring on my trunk support arms with no improvement in performance. I took them apart again and had the pivot hole welded and re-drilled. That worked for a few years. I then bought Drake's reproduction arms and they have performed very well for over 20 years.
