Topic: Heads

I have a '40 engine that was a basket case when I got it. It has 2 heads, both labeled with an "A" in the center. The Benny Bootle book indicates that there is a right and left, but I can't find the numbers he references to know which is right and which is left. Does it matter which one goes where?
Thanks

The numbers that are on my heads are 81A-6049
and 81A-6050. These numbers are on the top edge above the end spark plug hole, almost to where the edge
meets the head gasket surface. Clear as mud? Ken

The part numbers are located on the upper rolled area between the outer face and the inside face. When installed on the engine they face the fuel pump, so you will need a mirror to see the P/N if the heads and the intake manifold with the fuel pump are installed. If one of the heads is not on the correct side it will have it's part number at the front of the engine pointed to the generator. there are two different RH heads, both with the same part number. One has just one outlet fitting next to the center radiator hose fitting(and fordward of it), the other has two holes, one on each side of the radiator hose fitting. Off the top of my head I believe you want the head with one outlet fitting for the possible addition of the optional hot water heater valve(otherwise plugged). The second outlet was added for a second temperature sender and is a 1941 addition. Remember 81A-6049-A is the RH passenger side.
