My '40 convertible has 411 gears in the back. Were these stock? Did 40's also come with other ratios? What ratios were considered stock for passenger cars? Thanks

The more common rear end gears were 3:78. Unless your car was sold in mountainous country, it is likely the axle was swapped out sometime. Some prefer 3:54 gears, but the open car is somewhat heavier than the closed models. The 4:11 restrains the top speed, of course. Another "fix" is to consider the installation of an overdrive unit. I'd opt for a 25% OD. That would give you the equivalent of about3:09 for hiway driving, and get you above 60 mph, yet allow good power in city driving. I have an OD in my '47 convertible, and it really helps for hiway travel.
