  I need a rebuildable 1940 Mercury flathead V8 for a restoration project. A Ford won't do; it has to be a Mercury block. Any leads appreciated.

  Here's a few identifiers of a Merc block that I hope might help:
* The center water opening is round vs. the keystone shape of the 85 H.P. block.
* The standard bore is a nominal 3 3/16” diameter.
* Stamp coded on the right of the top surface between the cylinder head and valve chamber cover, very near the front was “99”.
* The top surface that mated the valve chamber cover was smooth. That is, no raised flange. Raised flanges did not appear until approximately the middle of August, 1940.
* Cylinder heads should have a "T" cast upon them vs. an "A".

  The Mercury block I need has "T99" stamped on the top deck, right front corner between the intake manifold and the edge of the machined surface. Like pre-1942 Ford blocks it has the "pencil" ledge at the front above the cam drive gear cover. 1939-40 blocks have twin humps in each side of the skirt of the block at the pan rail. The definitive Mercury characteristic is the center water passage between the front and rear pair of cylinders, visible only when the cylinder head is removed. The top water passage is an upside down triangle; the center is circular and the bottom is a rombus shaped rectangle with the bottom wider than the top. I don't know of a casting # that differentiates a Mercury block from a Ford block. Does anyonwe else know about this?
