Topic: Super delux window trim

I have a 1940 4 dr sdn. I think all of the window moldings are woodgrained. I am thinking of using Elmer Formbys wood graining but seeing the results on another car I am not sure if that is the way to go. Is there any system out there that will make the moldings look like the originals. Another question, did some cars come with the moldings painted the same as the dash?

Any do it yourself system depends upon your artistic skill. I have found that using a gel stain over a base color gives the best results. You can use mineral spirits to clean off your mistakes before the stain dries.

For a professional job, I like the process at M + M custom finishing. They use a water based printing system that gives an accurate reproduction of the wood grain.

The PPG book says that the "standard" window trim was painted "Mandarin Maroon", and the dash was "Thorne Brown". The deluxe shows "Burl Walnut grain" and "dark maroon with cream", but gives no more specifics. The straight grains were hard enough to duplicate, but the burl designs are best left to an expert. Most of the products sold that I've seen for the DIY produce a less than acceptable outcome.

Both the V8 models (standard) and the DeLuxe models had wood grained window moldings.
The V8 models had a brown walnut finish while the DeLuxe models had a reddish - brown mahogany finish.
There are some 'do it yourself' kits out there but as TomO stated, it depends much upon your level of expertise whether or not the completed job will be to your satisfaction.
If you are attempting to do a top restoration, I feel it is prudent to have the wood graining done by a professional as it (the moldings) are a definite point of attention within the interior.
As many '39 & '40 Fords as I have restored, I still have Lauren Matley do my graining. In my opinion, he is second to none.

Does the windshield frame also get the woodgrain finish. Also what color are the sun visor mounts, mine appear to be the same as the dash (Monaida Maroon?), would the hardware on the handpulls on a 2 dr be painted the same color as the dash? One final Q, does anyone have the PPG #'s for Monaida Maroon and Rose Metallic ? Thanks Beau

The windshield moldings are also wood grained.
The hand pulls on a deluxe are coated in brown plastic. The V8 models (standard) had chrome plated handles.
The sun visor brackets were painted brown - the same as the rear view mirror (head).
I do not have the PPG formula for the paints. Sorry.
Fordially,
