Topic: 40 battery connection sparks

  While connecting the battery on my SW it sparks at the terminals and drains down the battery even though connections are correct. (ground to + terminal) Any thoughts? I may have a direct short or current draw someplace in the system? Should I check the circuit breaker?

  It is obvious that you have a "parasitic" draw that is connected, even when the car is idle. Components fed directly from the battery at all times include the voltage regulator, the cigar lighter, a clock, if you have one, and the lighting circuit breaker. Place a test light between the battery post and cable, and disconnect each of these items until the test light goes out. If the circuit breaker seems to be the culprit, I'd check the stoplight switch first. Everything else, except the interior (pillar) lights go thru the light switch. If you don't have a diagram of your system, I can scan one for you. After you fix the problem, it is a good idea to install a master cutoff switch on your battery to prevent such problems, and for fire protection.

  Bob, you and I disagree on some things, but when it comes to keeping a Ford on the road, I'd want you in my pit crew every time. You combine experience with logic and (almost) invariably come up with the correct answers.
