I recently installed a factory reman 94 carb on my 40. After a week it started spewing fuel out the carb, ends up the float was holy. That has been replaced, and this new issue came up. After a short drive it starts sputtering, and I have worked out that it's loading up on gas and flooding itself while driving. I went through and thoroughly cleaned and rebuilt the carb and the issue persists. Thoughts on the next step?

My initial thought is the float is set too high. If you manually operate the throttle, can you keep it from loading up? Mike "Kube" Kubarth

Giving this issue more thought... I have had trouble with those "groose jet" needle / seat assemblies. Is that what you have by chance? The two that I have witnessed stuck open, never shutting the fuel off. Then, you may want to check the fuel pump pressure. Too high and it will force fuel past the needle. Mike "Kube" Kubarth

do you have a good fuel filter before the fuel pump ? maybe you have particles of dirt in the system.,? affecting the needle and seat ? how old is the gas,? also check the fuel pump pressure,do you have a electric pump ? hope this helps 37Ragtopman rule of thumb also remember that most fuel problems are electrical how it the coil and points, ?? distributer been rebuilt lately ? all wiring clean and tight ? Has the vehicle experienced any induction system backfires? If so, the backfire may have blown out the diaphragm in the power valve which would cause excessive fuel in the intake manifold and loading up.

if it's idling or running in the driveway it seems fine. Problem only seems to come up when driving, and then pretty quickly.

new fuel tank and line. factory pump, good filter in the system as well. the electrical/ignition seems good. all as good as it can for it's age!

Here comes what you might think is a dumb question. When the carburetor was put back together, was the gasket installed correctly so that all of the holes were connected without leaks between the airhorn and the main body?

If it seems flooded after sitting for a short period making the car hard to start and runs extremely rich it is possible the power valve is ruptured or it's gasket is leaking. Daytona parts in Fla has the best rebuilding kits for the proper 40 Carb which is the 91-99.

I have been through what 40 Coupe and Carcrazy described. In my case, got crud in the carb, which caused the engine run lousy and ultimately to back fire. Cleaned the carb up and the backfire was gone, but it ran poorly at idle-it also coughed out the exhaust periodically when idling. The idle was inconsistent. From this forum I learned that the backfire could damage the power valve. I bought a couple of the from Daytona in Florida. Changed the power valve and it runs and idles extremely well now. I would check the needle and seat, and float level that kubes40 suggested (I would check all three while the carb is out).

I will give it a shot. New needle and seat, new power valve. all new gaskets. thorough cleaning, had all passages open and clear. I will go try the float adjustment.

Took it apart, actually just took the top of the carb off on the car. Readjusted the float. she's running like a dream now. Not sure. I adjusted to the spec on the instructions, but obviously that was too high. first adjustment went too low and she wouldn't stay running after starting. went in the middle... seems to be the spot. Thanks for the advice. @Kubes40, you were dead on with your first thought.
