Topic: 1936 Starter

I’m having a strange issue. My 1936 Ford starts just fine but sometimes I push the starter and get NOTHING!! If I push start the car it will start right up and then the starter works just fine for 15-20 starts and then I have to push start it again. Is this the starter?? I also have a brand new battery in it that is holding a charge just fine.

That sounds like a poor starter switch. Or a bad connection.

The repop switches are poopy.

It could also be the Bendix or the solenoid.

  No solenoid on a '36.
Usually, the starter motor will spin a defective bendix but not engage.
It sounds as if there is no power going to the starter when this happens. Is that correct Soundguy?

  no starter sometimes,
I would remove the band on the starter, and use a good light, and look at the comuntator and see if it is dirty
maybe has oil on it, ? coroded copper ? sticking brushes, WORN BRUSHES
if so you can use a electric motor cleaner on it, and some 320 wet and dry sandpaper on it, [ use GOGGLES.]
if might have a bad spot on it,
if it has issues, I would remove and send out to CERTIFIED AUO ELECTRIC in OHIO,
they did mine in my 37, used a hight torque field coils, completely rebuilt,
a lot cheaper then the new and better,
hope this helps 37 Ragtopman,Maine,

That’s correct. It’s like there is no voltage at all. Heck I thought I had a dead battery but did not.

It sounds like your starter switch is going bad. Hook a volt meter to the starter terminal when it is failing to start to see if 6V is getting to the starter. If you are getting 6V to the starter, remove the starter and have it rebuilt.
