It's the only part of the dash I don't have fully working. If I connect it it sort of works but whines and jumps around. if I disconnect it the cable from the trans seems to turn steadily and smoothly. I'd like to get it back working

Ford used a couple of different speedo suppliers. You have to remove the instrument cluster, On one speedo there is a small cup in a small hole at the rear of the speedo. You can pry the cup out and add about 4-5 small drops of light oil to the hole. Allow a couple of days for the oil to soak into the cotton at the bottom of the hole and onto the main shaft of the speedo drive. After removing the speedo cable from the speedo you can turn the speedo drive with a small screwdriver stuck into the drive. Check for smooth operation.
