What is the best gear oil for transmissions and rear ends in early fords these days?Where do you purchase this?GL-4 gear oil seems to be hard to find anymore!

What year Early Ford car do you have? If your car is a late Flathead model (1949-1953) with a Borg-Warner Overdrive, you will want to use a GL-1 Gear Oil in the transmission and O/D unit mounted to the rear of the transmission. An appropriate oil is NAPA SAE 90W API GL-1 Mineral Gear Oil. Your local NAPA store can order it for you and have it in a day or two. The part number for a 1-gallon container is 65-201. If your car has a conventional transmission, you can use Pennzoil Synchromesh Manual Transmission Fluid. This oil provides API GL-3 level performance. Your Rear Axle should be O.K. with an Extreme Pressure Gear Oil API GL-5 hypoid oil like that used in modern rear axles. An SAE 80-90 or straight SAE 90 weight would be acceptable.

I have a stock 1940 ford with no over drive and also a stock 1952 Ford F-1.There is so many different gear oils out there now.If you notice now most of these are synthetic oils?Seems to me like the market for say just GL-4 gear oil has got complicated.

Yes they do but it says SAE 140,what does that mean?I would rather have 90W.I located some at a NAPA near me,well they had to order it?I am not interested in using GL-5 in my old Fords! https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/SL_SL24239 This message was edited by fortyford on 12-15-23 @ 5:46 AM

140 wt. is just fine for your '40 Ford. That's what I use in my '40 with absolutely no problems.

Do you not have any shift problems when it is cold weather?

No sir, don't have any shifting problems in our cold weather here in Texas. The 140 wt. GL4 gear oil actually makes shifting easier in all temperature ranges.
