85 HP 221 cubic inch 40 Ford original motor needs rebuild. It has steel sleeves. Can sleeves be removed to gain extra displacement or are there better alternatives. How did they get 100HP in the mercury engine as I believe it was available in 1940? All suggestions welcome I can learn from others experience. Thanks marvin miller

I don't know if they are still available but about 20 years ago I had a '40 engine rebuilt and the machinist removed the 0.040" wall sleeves and replaced the pistons with 0.083" oversize ones.

If the cylinder wall thickness is enough, you can leave the steel sleeves out. Unfortunately it is difficult to determine wall thickness at every point in the engine. If you leave the sleeves out, hone the walls to a standard oversize, install pistons, run the engine and then get a cylinder wall crack, you will have to use cast iron sleeves to make the engine usable. The 1939 and 1940 Mercury blocks were cast with a larger bore and then the sleeves were fitted. Tom

Thanks Tom for passing on your knowledge. Think I will leave the sleeves not worth the risk. Any other rebuild tips on rebuild much appreciated. Marvin marvin miller
