Who has a correct reproduction fan belt with raised script part # for a 1940 ford 85hp std coupe?
Thanks Tom.

Absolutely NO ONE reproduces a correct fan belt. The screen printed ones you most often see are incorrect as 1) the original belts had the numbers, etc. molded upon the belt, not painted and 2) the repop belts are too narrow thus ride in the pulleys too shallow.
You will have to search for a correct belt. On occasion they come up for sale. Expect $100+ for NOS.
1940 Fords built prior to early June, 1940 used belt #78-8620-A. After the early part of June the part number changed to 78-8620-C.
The "C" belt is a bit shorter to accommodate the smaller generator pulley that was placed into production at the beginning of June 1940.
VERY often you will see the incorrect pulleys on restored 1940 Fords. Be aware that the first design was 3 11/16" diameter and used until the beginning of June, 1940. The smaller (more easily found) pulley was 3 3/16" diameter and wasn't placed into production until June, 1940.
Hope this helps.

What is a 78-8620-C3 for? I have one N.O.S. still in the FoMoco cardboard wrapper.

C3 is simply a revision of 'C'. Length and width are no doubt the same. It may be possible it was a change in construction, etc.
I'd be interested in that belt if it is for sale.

The wide vee belts depend on the angle of the sides to prevent slipping, and even if the length is correct, the angles may not be. If you try to overcome that problem by tightening the belt, it is likely that the water pump bushings will be damaged. Correct belts, particularly those with the "script" markings, tend to be expensive, and NOS belts may be very old and hardened by exposure to ozone. Many report that the "correct" belts don't fit. We buy ours from a local electric motor shop that has a big selection of lengths and pitches.

I have a nos 78-8620-A 40 belt that i bought from carpenter at a Dearborn meet years ago.It did not fit, to tight. Is there any process to stretch the belt?
Thanks BOB

The "A" belt SHOULD fit on a stock '40 with the 85HP. The "B" belt was for 1939 with an aluminum valve chamber cover. Those (B belts) will NOT fit a cast iron cover.

I did find a reproduction fan belt with raised ford script and # 78-8620-B3 from Dennis Carpenter. The look, fit and size work. It is made in China. Thanks for all the information about the fan belt. I am now looking for a correct radiator hose clamps and screws for my 40 std coupe. The ones that come with Bob Drake hoses do not seem to fit well on the themostat end of the hoses? Thanks Tom.

Good to hear the repop belts (A type) fit the large pulley.
I never understood why it is apparently so difficult to make the hose clamps correctly.
They are as you suggest too small. I have a limited quantity of NOS clamps and when compared are definitely a larger diameter.

Would you be interested in selling any of your correct clamps? Thanks Tom.

kubes40    -- 08-07-2010 @ 1:17 PM
Sorry Tom. Normally I am happy to help but I have only enough to do my next two cars, a 39 wagon and another 40 convertible. After that I am up the proverbial creek.

Tom, unfortunately the reproduction hose clamps from Drake and other vendors also stretch when tightened and do not clamp the hoses securely.

Your best bet is to search swap meets for the clamps.

It has been 3-4 years since someone raised the question "does anyone offer the correct fan belt for a 40 Ford? The one I want to replace is a raised Ford script with a part number 78-8620 C3. All I want is one that will work on the car using the present one as a sizing reference. Do any of the current players in the parts game offer one???

kubes40    -- 07-28-2013 @ 4:29 PM
The belt with the "C" suffix was for 1940 Fords built from June 1940 and later. These vehicles were equipped with the smaller diameter (3 3/16") pulley.
Carpenter offers a molded belt that will fit and has the raised Ford script and part number, etc. His number is 78-8620-B.
Not quite "concourse correct" with that "B" suffix but it will fit your engine. He gets $30 for the belt.
