Topic: Unidentified wire underneath car

Hello everyone, new member and new to my 40 ford deluxe. Found this wire hanging down the other day when I was crawling around underneath it. You can see the the underneath side of the floor headlight switch to kind of give you a location of it. Color may be yellow with a red on it. Cannot find another wire to connect this to. Any comments on this would be appreciated. I think the only thing that doesn't work is the gas guage, but that could be a different issue. Thanks in advance for any suggestions you might have. Hope my pics come through ok.

think it could be--look for the bundle of connectors right at steering column under the hood and you might find an empty one!

If the unused wire exits the wiring harness with a second wire, where does the second wire go ? From the appearance of the cloth cover on the harness It appears to me to be an aftermarket harness. It is possible it is a spare wire but spare wires always have a second end that could be connected to battery power so it is best to find both ends of spare wires and make sure both are disconnected and isolated.

It looks like a larger wire that may be a power source to the horn, dimmer switch, or brake lights.Check to see if all three of these work. Also use a test light to see if it is a "hot wire" with the igntion on or off.

Looks like a solid yellow. Fuel gauge-to-tank sender wire should be a solid yellow. The cowl harness connections to the rear body harness are at this location, under the floor dimmer switch. Should be two other wires coming out of the cowl harness together with the yellow: a black (tail light), and a green (brake light).

I would suggest looking at the front terminations of the rear body harness; see if there is a (not-connected) yellow wire sticking out.

Edit: I see what looks like a modern wire in the picture. Not sure what that could be. Probably unrelated. But just maybe someone was down there trying to solve the fuel gauge problem? Is that modern wire now connected to the rear body harness' fuel sender wire?

First I would like to thank all who have commented on this post, being new to these type of old cars I appreciate it. Another close up pic of the wire it looks to be yellow with a red tracer on it. It's close to the copper gas line that rides along the frame. I'm going to get to the garage tomorrow and check everything over again to see if I might be missing something somewhere like on the light, bright dim floor switch and other places and will get back with my findings. Will try and put the battery back in as I stored it inside the house during the long winter here in Indiana. Thanks again guys!
