My husband purchased a 1940 Ford Coupe in the early nineties which won First place in the Senior Antique Automobile Club of America in 1985 along with 2nd place in the Gran Nationals in 1986. My husband has passed now and we had never given a thought about looking into these honors. I have recently been in touch with the Antique Car Club and they are sending me the information that they have on my car. What would this car have to do to win these honors and could it possibly give it a little more value? Thanks, Chatterbox

Chatterbox, Mike Kubarth here. I am the advisor to the club for both '39 and '40 Fords. I have owned dozens of these cars and watch the market carefully. The AACA award is not going to add much value but may make the car a bit easier to sell if that's your ultimate goal. The AACA judges the car more on the quality of the restoration vs. the correctness. Thus, if the car is "pretty", it may very well win the award shown in your photo. Being that award was given 37 years ago, makes it much less potential to add to its current value. The Ford Club judges cars on correctness. That is, "as the car left the factory". A second-place award would be bestowed upon a car that is of a nice "driver" quality. This would be at the level that most would consider a #3. As I'd mentioned prior in regard to the AACA award, this Ford Club award, being 36 years gone by, will not offer any additional value. I am more than willing to offer a fair and honest appraisal to you but would prefer to do so privately for your sake. Mike "Kube" Kubarth
