What’s the replacement for “cylinder oil soda soap grease”. I have a service manual that says that’s what you use on the u-joint. I have put the transmission back in and am connecting the driveline. It has a zert fitting on the collar so I am hoping it is just regular old chassis grease. . . I need some help here. I was also at the local chain auto parts store looking for GL 3 or 4 gear oil. They only have GL 4 or 5 and they both said for “non-synchronized “ transmissions. VanPelt just rebuilt my transmission and installed new synchros, etc. Any help on what retailer carries the correct gear oil?

Find yourself a Tractor Supply store. They still carry the older transmission gear oil.

As others will tell you, glob the grease on the u-joint (butter it up good).
The grease fitting will allow you to add some, but no where near what is recommended to be applied to the u-joint.

The best oil that I could find to use in the manual synchromesh transmissions is this one: Pennzoil Synchromesh Manual Transmission Fluid. It has API GL-3 level performance. It should be available at you local auto parts store.
