Topic: Motor Mount Replacement

Anyone have the trick to compressing the replacement motor mounts so they can use the bolts that are supplied? The old bolts are the same length as the new ones, but the rubber mount is 3/8”+ too tall. I am considering cutting them to fit.

Try letting the weight of the engine compress the rubber biscuit before installing the nut.

You may have the incorrect bolts. There are two different lengths 3.25" & 3.0"

It has been sitting on the donuts overnight at my son’s shop, I find it hard to believe the transmission mounts will reduce in height, the engine might though. If they don’t crush, I guess another $40 at Drakes will fix the problem.

Those do not look like the Bob Drake motor mounts. His have the cad plated bolt and black painted washers.

Do not cut down the rubber, it may cause clutch chatter. Several people with clutch chatter changed to Bob Drake motor mounts and solved their problem.

The new ones are from VanPelt. It appears that the engine and transmission are going to be 3/8"+ higher than what the old mounts were. That will change the angle of the torque tube 'slightly". Is that an issue? I can cut them down, get it running and see if it chatters. If it doesn't, then good, if it does, then I call Drake. Doesn't that make sense? Or put the old ones back in.

OK, problem appears to be solved. The VanPelt bolts are 3 1/4" long, just like the Drake replacement bolts. I trimmed off the rubber grommet that goes next to the bolt head to gain about an 1/8" then working the bolt and grommet up from below, we could slip the upper "donut" on and using the old washer (the new one is twice as thick as the old one) we could crank on it and squish it down. The picture of the bolt and grommet have the grommet on backwards, I trimmed the smaller diameter rubber. It needs to go down a little more to get the cotter pin inserted.

That looks like a good work around. Trimming the bottom rubber is better than trimming off the top. You need the correct cushion and mount height.

I would inform Mac Van Pelt about the difficulty with the mounts, so he can change his source to one that makes a better quality product. You should be able to just install a reproduction and not have to go through all sorts of gyrations to redesign a product that is a poor reproduction.

  Dont forget the cotter pin

The VanPelt part works if you trim the 1/8” off the part next to the bolt. I just didn’t think it through originally.
