Topic: Oil Changes and Recommendations

I'm about to change oil for the first time on a recently acquired '40 Ford flathead without an oil filter. What is the correct amount of oil for these engines - 4 or 5 quarts?

Besides not having an oil filter, are there any other pointers to know about changing oil on these engines? Drain plug issues, etc?

What are your suggestions for brand and weight of oil in the northeast for winter lay-up? Should we be concerned with the lack of Zinc in modern motor oil?

Thank you.

  Here is my opinion.

The owners manual and and the Shop Notes state 5 quarts of oil is the correct amount for a 1940 Ford, with or without a filter.

Use one of the major brands of oil with an API star on it. That ensures that there is a sufficient amount of detergents and wear additive in the oil. I prefer a 10W-30 oil as it will provide the best lubrication for the engine at all normal engine temperatures.

I am not concerned with the lack of ZDDP in a stock engine. If you have a modified camshaft, contact the manufacturer for his recommendations.
