Topic: Noisy at highway speeds:

For some reason I have always experienced my stock 40 being noisy under the hood at say 60 to 70 speeds. The only thing I can point to would be the air cleaner. The engine runs smooth and quiet up to these faster speeds.I am using the small type dry air cleaner and wondering if by chance the larger oil bath cleaner would be quieter?Has anyone experienced this problem?

Have you tried driving one time with no air cleaner to see if the air cleaner is the noise source?
BTW, I think 60-70 mph is excessive RPM for the engine unless you have an overdrive.

If you are using the standard 3.78:1 ratio rear axle, the Flathead is turning faster than it wants to at 70 MPH. The engine will be much happier if you limit your highway cruising speed to 60 MPH or less.

  HI noisy at highway speeds

Besides, the air cleaner,
I never heard of a real noise coming out of the air cleaner,
check the WATER PUMPS. for loose bearing, etc
generator brgs,
and if the fan belt is dry and hard, or loose,
any exhuast leaks, burnt out muffler, broken baffles.inside,? blown out gaskets,
use a rubber mallet and tap on the exhaust system, see if you have a rattle ,
hope this helps 37Ragtopman

Yes my rear end ratio is 3.78 with no over drive.I agree with everyone on the 70 mph is pushing the car to hard.I think I possibly need to refrain from over working my engine in this matter, maybe that is part of my problem.I will check these things that were suggested.
