Topic: Columbia Overdrive (OD)

Does anyone have familiarity with a Columbia OD set up on a '40 Ford? My car has one installed but it is currently inoperable and I'd like to trouble-shoot the issue(s). Thank you.

There are many here with experience. What does your Columbia not do? The most common issue is for it to not shift. If so a common point is the vacuum shift can with the two vacuum lines may be dry and stuck. John Connelly in Arizona "Columbia Two Speed"has all the repair parts. make sure there is vacuum on the two lines also since a shift valve could be the problem. One of the most important items is to keep the differental full of lube.

Here is a link to his web site. Buy his book to help you maintain your Columbia.

  Thank you, Tom.

All that I know with any certainty is that there is a "Columbia OD" switch mounted on the dash. Nothing happens when the switch is toggled either up or down. So, I'm starting at the very beginning to determine the various parts to the system and trouble-shooting from the switch back ( or forward).

Tom, the link to John Connelly's website and his book did not come through on the forum. Would you, please, repost that information? Thank you.

Sorry about that, I must remember to lubricate the squirrel cage so that the squirrels in my head can spin it.

It sounds as if you have later controls in your '40 - not the proper ones. If that's the case, there can be numerous areas that may cause shifting issues. The proper '40 controls were pretty much trouble free.

The first thing I'd do is check the magnetic / vacuum solenoid to be certain it is operating correctly. Very often, the rubber diaphragm on each end is rotted and cracked. I keep the rebuilds in stock as so many guys come to me for this same repair.
Then there's the electric switch itself. That's mounted a little lower than the solenoids. They can be troublesome.
The vacuum canister on the axle housing can cause issues but that would be my last thing to check.
My money is on the switch and / or solenoid diaphragms.

As has ben noted, go to Connelly's site and look for "trouble shooting".

If your Columbia has all of the electrical controls for the post war Columbia then the clutch has to be depressed as well as the dash switch operated to shift.

Thank you, much, Tom. When you lube up that squirrel cage, please, hand me some some of the same. In fact, today, I was on a "zoom" group call to learn about the technology at the campus where I'm an adjunct instructor. About an hour into the session, I said I had to leave as I was getting nothing out of the good attempts at teaching how to use "their" technology to give exams and grade students. Nothing made sense and, thus, I knew it was "me." Where's that squirrel cage oil?

Thank you, Mike. I will pursue your diagnosis path, and likely, reach back out to you for follow-up and, perhaps, parts if you have them.
