Topic: Convertible Top Canisters

My convertible top canisters have gunk in the bottom of each of them and their appears to be some sort of "lubricant" on the underside of the "plunger' or "piston" in one of them, the other is pretty dry.

What is normal? The goo has seeped back down to the lower hose and eaten away at the hose. The top tries to go up and down, it just doesn't have enough "oomph". I am replacing all the hoses where they connect to the metal pipes but I want to put the canisters into working order.

Also, there was a very thin gasket on one of the canisters, almost a paper gasket. Is it necessary to have the gasket? I can make two new ones.

Thoughts?

Leather seals take a light oil soak and work the oil into the leather. Add a light coating of the same oil inside the cylinders. I like to use synthetic oil about 10W.

So the sludge that has accumulated in each canister needs to be cleaned out, correct? It is definitely petroleum based, almost like a grease, very black. Do you soak the plungers in oil or just rub it in? Thanks .

Ready to soak the leather on the pistons.
