Topic: Stray Wire on the Engine Harness

Right next to the generator, I have an "original looking" wire that someone put an extension on to use on . . . who knows what, the old coil? The extension wire had a ring terminal on it and it was just laying on the intake. The coil on this "fix" is mounted in front of the radiator. I guess I could check it for power to see if it is always "hot"when the switch is on. The wire to the positive side of the coil is connected to the distributor. The negative connection goes back to the firewall cover and I assume to the ignition switch. Rube Goldberg was alive and well for this repair.

The loose wire is most likely the original wire to the coil that would have been mounted to the top of the distributor. It should go to the ignition resistor that is mounted under the dash on the firewall. It may be loose at that end also. You may want to consider installing the generator pulley retaining clip at the front of the generator armature. The engine turns in the direction of loosing the pulley, if the pulley comes off it will do a lot of damage to the radiator plus more.
