Took my '40 out for a spin after hanging a Skip tuned distributor on it. Ran flawlishly for 10 miles then got rough like on 4 cylinders and a cloud of gray smoke out the exhaust Barely limped home, fogging all the way. Coil is by Skip. Swapped out the condenser. Pulled the plugs and found two on each side gasoline wetted and all the others sooted up. Help.

Do a compression test. A bad coil or distributor will not make the engine put out gray smoke. You may have a blown head gasket. Is the coolant level low?

Sounds like it's running on 4 cyl's, ck the insertion of the wires into the dist cap. Is #1 on #1??

Which cylinders had the wet plugs? Sounds like the rotor is not delivering the correct spark.

Cylinders 2-3 and 6-7 had the wet plugs. Pulling the distributor off tomorrow. Hope the problem is obvious. Engine was running perfect.

Check that your inner caps are completely seated in the distributor. With the cylinders that you gave, it appears to be more cap related than distributor related. Either the wires are not seated or the caps are not seated.

Turns out the carb power valve failed. Installed this NOS ford carburetor 2yrs ago not thinking about yr of manuf. Must have been prior gasohol introduction cause the rubber diaphragm was badly distorted. Can't blame the ignition this time. Carl

Daytona has a good rebuilding kit. Many other kits have problems with PV.
