has anyone had the need to change the oil hoses from the engine to the oil filter on a 1940 ford any ideas on where to find them

Quite frankly, you'll need to be careful with NOS hoses as they are more often that not quite brittle.
I've never found any replacement hoses that have the correct appearance. If "correct" doesn't matter to you, any hydraulic hose fitting place near you, can make them up quite reasonably.

You say hoses. Mine has one hose and one steal line. Is that normal?

My hose is seeping so I will have to replace it.

  Hillfarmer,
That depends on the year of your vehicle. Sometime past 1940 (I'm not 100% certain when) Ford went to steel line(s).

My 1940 has a hose for in and a steel line for out of the filter. The hose was frayed and started leaking at the block. I could not find a correct hose so I had the local NAPA store make a hydraulic hose for it. The fittings were too bulky and it cannot be installed.

While trying to install it I realized the reason the old hose failed. This hose passes near the accelerator linkage and the linkage was pushing on the hose when the accelerator was depressed over flexing it at the ferrule.

I think the brass fitting in the block has a slight angle to keep the hose away from the linkage. I think the fitting must be installed to angle the hose in a very precise angle to avoid the linkage.

So if you install an oil line make sure the linkage clears the line.
