  I have heard that Ford did not install 60 HP motors in the 1940 Deluxe models. Being this was the last year for the 60HP motor, Ford must have stopped producing them sometime in 1939, and was just trying to use the stock up. I have heard from more than one, that this motor was under powered , so it seems to make sense. Who would pay up for the Deluxe model and then ask for the 60 HP? Domenic

  I can't say for certain why anyone would buy a Deluxe model with a 60HP engine. However, they did and a lot of them. Perhaps they liked the deluxe styling but wanted the advertised efficiency of the smaller engine.

And no, Ford did not stop producing them in 1939. They were manufactured through the entire 1940 model year.

  1940 Ford V8-60 engines differ from the 1937 thru 1939 engines in several ways. The 1940 engine has the cooling fan mounted to the front of the crankshaft, the oil filler pipe is located in the intake manifold instead of the bell housing area, and the crankshaft main bearing journals are 1/10" larger in diameter.

  I don't believe that we were at gas rationing yet. I was just able to purchase an original 1941 Willy's steel coupe . It still has the original 4 cylinder flathead engine, and it produces 63 HP . It weights 2200 lbs. and they say that it was the car for everyone, that nobody wanted. Looking at what Mike said, I think that some people just had to be frugal . Thanks Mike for your input.

  There were 204 deluxe models equipped with the 60HP engine. One was actually a convertible. Most (161) were fordor sedans.

  In order to determine if a '40 came with the 60 motor you can tell by the serial # on the frame. If it was a 60 car the serial number prefix would 54 rather than 18.

  Mike that's great that you actually have the break down of the 1940Ford Deluxe car's with the 60 HP and the 54 pre-fix. When I do the math and subtract the four doors and the one convertible, I am left with only 42 car's. Do you know how the 42 cars are divided up into two door sedan's, and coupe's?By 1940 their was no Phaeton,1939 saw the last one of those. Domenic

  Triford8, thanks for your input. The frame has the vin. number stamped in three places on the frame, but the front one by the crossmember rivets on the drivers side of the car ,is the only one of the three that can be seen with the body on the frame, and it's the only one that has the "pre-fix "included . The other place which I am told that gets the vin. number stamped first is the top of the bell on the rear of the transmission. I am not sure if this one includes the "pre-fix "in it.This one can be viewed by removing the two wooden floor pans , and the transmission cover I am told , but if the transmission was replaced it will have a different vin.   There's a flat boss on the bell housing just above the clutch inspection cover. The SN is stamped on that boss and has the prefix along with the production number. That number is the number that is stamped on the frame at the time the engine and transmission are placed in the frame at the time of assembly.

  There was never a plate riveted to the frame with a serial number.

  Mike, I think he meant that the SN is near the rivets in the crossmember.
