Here is a picture of what I believe to be an ARK-LESS late 1940/1941 hot water heater switch.

The knob on the switch is a 1939 hot water heater knob

Tom you are correct, it dose have a 1939 knob on it in the picture. As discussed in the previous posts , these ARK-LES hot water switches between 1939 and 1948 will allow you to pull off the knob with the brass collar attached so they can easily be interchanged. The off brand switches, other than the ARK-LES ones will not. Ford's 1939- 40 hot water heater motors are double wound so that they can run both clockwise, and also counter clock wise, one direction for the heat, and another direction for the defrost. These hot water switches had to switch the direction's and also have two speeds for both direction's. 1939 was Ford's first hot water heater. Before that they had hot air. Car's also had axillary gas heater's , which worked like an old gas stove , and had a pilot lite.
