Topic: 40 Temp. Sender 2 Prong?

  Why is it that I have been seeing a temperature sending unit offered for sale many times even in original O1A-10990 part boxes for sale claiming to be correct for a 1940 Ford V-8 Flathead when in reality a 1940 Ford Flathead V-8 takes a temperature sending unit with only one Prong not two prongs?

  Actually there are NO prongs on a correct '40 sending unit. It utilizes a small machine screw (a #8-32 if I recall correctly) to fasten the end of the wire to the unit.

  The (2) prong came out later. 1946? It was on the driver side, and a wire went to the passenger side single prong (1) for the gauge and 91) to the passenger side from double prong driver side. The idea was to tell you if you were overheated (on one side or both) by sending a signal to the temp gauge that made it go to full hot, when you were already in trouble. The single terminal was only for temp in the normal range(s). To me the 2 prong was overkill, because the single prong would let you know if you were running hot, by climbing from where it normally ran, toward the "hot" on the gauge.
