There are (2)wires-(1)yel/grn tracer-heavy gauge, and (1) gray, about 18 gauge,in a black cloth sleeve w/a red tracer, that are not connected to anything and start from somewhere near the area of light switch or dash lights dimmer. Both wires are always "hot."w/out ignition on. Everything electrical on the car works(except the radio-it turns on, but no AM station sounds.) What are these wires for?? They each have bullet wire ends on them and end in the area between the radio and the ignition switch.

The Y/G is most likely the cigar lighter, most leave the lighter disconnected, if it is, it comes from the lighting circuit breaker and is always energized. Gray wire??

Thanks!! I never thought of the cigar lighter. I never tried it, and you may be right on that one. Maybe someone knows what the 18 gauge gray wire is?

Aha! I had to get something out of my glove box on the 1940 Ford, and lo and behold, a gray wire, 18 gauge, is going to ...The Clock!!!!

That gray wire (18awg) is the power to the clock.

Oops- I meant to say, the gray wire is the clock light. (it should be actually, Blue/red stripe- but somebody must have repaired it and added what they had on hand.) Clock power is a brown wire at the clock that will connect to the, always hot yellow/green power wire. The clock doesn't work, so I'll leave that hot wire disconnected and blocked off.
