My steering column is loose where it mounts to the dash and need to change the pads. How is the steering lock mounted to the dash?I thought this might be an easy fix but appears different!

There are two bolts that fasten the column "drop" to the instrument panel. Many times one was a common hex head bolt - easily removed. The other? That was a special "twist off" bolt. When installed the head was meant to twist off.
Apparently an early attempt at theft protection. Not a good attempt mind you, but that's what Ford did back then.
On occasion, both bolts installed were the twist off type.
I have had good fortune removing them with a slim jaw locking pliers. It takes patience as you can only turn it a bit at a time when the instrument panel remains in the car.
Hope this helps,
Mike "Kube" Kubarth

If you have a difficult time removing that twist off bolt, remove the gauge cluster. Then, you may work through the opening.

I think I am going to have to remove the gauge cluster to work. There is a 1/2 inch bolt on drivers side and can barley get a socket on and it will not move.I sprayed both with PB blaster and will let soak for a few days and see.I have not even tried the twist off because there is barley anything to get hold of.
