Topic: 39-40 under side running boards holes or no holes

thunder road    -- 03-26-2017 @ 6:27 AM
Hello can you tell me if the 39-40 Ford underside/bottom of the running boards had a series of 1/8 production holes, possible so the glue could penetrate and hold the rubber covers in place better? I have seen with and without holes? I know different plants sometimes did things a little different. Or is this possibly a late 40 thing only? Also showing the difference of the underside of the 39-40 coupe trunk lids may be a good thing to add to the book unless the book is already done. Dom

ALL authentic running boards had a series of holes in them to allow the vulcanizing process a best adherence.

I have included photos of both the '39 and '40 coupe trunk lids.

Thank you for the information. Now days you don't see to many cars left with the original running boards. On the 39 -40 coupe trunk lids, are you showing the underside inner structure differences? Or the outside?

The underside of the lids will be depicted clearly.

That's a picture of a '39 trunk lid. It is possible a few of these were installed on '40 Fords but that would have been in August of 1939, perhaps, PERHAPS, in to September.

In this picture of the inside of the 1939 coupe trunk lid you can clearly see the saturated felt , adhered to the middle section. This I\4 inch heavy sound deadening ,tar paper was used in various locations . Are these locations possibly going to be portrayed in the new book? Also the correct location of the Ford script / date code/ etching for the glass?

I have a very very original 40 Deluxe Coupe with 11/39
and 12/39 dated glass that has 39 style inner structure
to the trunk lid. The lid appears original to the car
and is like the 40 lid shown in the photo previously posted.

Thunder, It may be best to address your unique questions / concerns in separate posts so more folks would be likely to view them.

The insulating paper within the trunk lid, as well as other places, is addressed in the book. It is by the way, about 1/8" thick.
Locations of the glass date codes is also addressed.

Kubes40 , thank you for the info . Since I was a kid on a bike dreaming about cars, the 40 ford coupe was always my favorite . I can't wait to get the book , but don't rush it . Dom
