I have just reinstalled my rebuilt engine into my 40 Ford 4Dr Delux. My grandson who is a mechanic student suggested thet the engine might need to be aligned. He said that he thinks that the holes for the bolts holding the engine mounts are somewhat elongated. Is there a procedure for aligning the engine or not. Neither of us are sure, and I can not find any reference for this anywhere.

if you have the two anti-chatter rods properly attached to block and to frame, then you are properly alighned

alsmith39. The rubber mounts will allow enough "flex" to accommodate any minor misalignment issue. That's not true in the earlier 32-34 Fords however. My Dad bought a new 34 3-window and it kept popping out of gear. He took it back to the dealer, and they found that the center cross member had the rear motor mount plate holes punched to one side about a 3/8ths of an inch. This put a "serious" bind, and side-load on the transmission output shaft, and torque-tube. They replaced the center cross member, and he drove the car until he traded it in for my 38. I wasn't born until 1939, so I don't know whether they riveted or simply bolted the replacement part in. Anyway; as your grandson suggested; gross misalignment CAN cause problems, but as you say, "you're good to go".

Yes the holes in the water pump for the motor mount bolts are oblong. As mentioned above tighten the engine radius rods will align the engine. Then tighten the motor mount nuts.
